Painting in Progress
This is the first small sketch to get the idea
of composition and patterns of light and
dark.  This one is 8" x 12" but usually the
sketch is called a thumbnail which is
usually a few inches. For some reason I
chose to do this one larger.
The drawing has now been done onto
the canvas- 18" x 24" with vine
charcoal. This stage is very important,
because it is now that I decide where it
will be the best on the canvas. Any
changes are made now when it is easy
to "erase". Notice the things I feel are
the most important in this painting.
His face , his son and their interlocking
hands.
This is a story of a last good-bye. When
the painting is done I will tell you  The
Story-
I sprayed the drawing lightly with fixative-
then put on a thinned undercoat of oil paint.
The color varies with me, as to how I feel
about a particular painting ,and I am always
experimenting with the color. This is better
than starting on a white canvas and gives
sparkle to the lights when you first introduce
them.
